Concerned Listeners and KPFA
Three years ago local peace and labor activists became concerned about the KPFA Local Station Board (LSB). It seemed to define the staff and the management of KPFA as enemies and spent a great deal of time denouncing “entrenched staff” and station management. At the very time that progressives needed to present a united front, a confrontational mind-set by a few compromised the effectiveness of the whole.
We founded Concerned Listeners (CL) in an effort to alter the perception that divides the world into “Us & Them.” We need your help today more than ever.
* CL supports quality radio -- while the content may be alternative, the delivery must be professional.
* CL believes staff and management need flexibility -- to use their expertise and training to produce quality programming. We believe in a collaborative relationship among management, staff and listeners. We do not assume that management is evil, but is a necessary part of keeping a broadcast outlet on the airwaves.
* CL stands for responsible budgeting – We’ve brought resolutions calling for greater financial transparency, accountability and discipline from the Pacifica Network. We have the best track record on financial accountability of any group on KPFA’s Local Station Board. We have repeatedly called for stricter financial controls within Pacifica, greater restraints on national spending, and we have repeatedly stood against financial deals crafted to benefit members of the Pacifica National Board and their friends.
* CL believes KPFA must remain a voice for left and progressive ideas to reach a far wider audience and to help unify that audience against current U.S. foreign and domestic policies. We don’t have a litmus test for our listeners. We welcome the voices of Greens, Peace and Freedom, Democrats, Independents and intelligent Republicans too!
* CL believes the future of KPFA lies in inclusiveness -- in creating a program mix that will bring in new listeners who are becoming more receptive to a progressive and left agenda. We feel our opponents represent a narrow, inflexible sectarianism whose target audience is small and marginal, in the style of preaching to the choir.
* CL believes KPFA must expand its Internet presence -- not only to reach new and younger audiences but also to test new programming. An example is “The War Comes Home” website that KPFA put together around the Winter Soldier hearings, which allowed internet users to access other sites and connect with related materials.
* CL wants quality, professional, sharp-edged programming –we cannot do that if we don’t have faith that we can reach out and bring in an audience that is representative of the American people.
* CL needs your help – help us help the station raise money, expand its listenership and reach out to new audiences.
Help us make KPFA and Pacifica a powerful voice for peace and justice! Help Concerned Listeners be your voice on the Station Board! Vote the entire Concerned Listener slate!
