Mike SmithMike Smith wants KPFA to continue to be the voice for progressive change, and an essential part of the movements for peace, social, economic, and environmental justice. He says, “I can’t imagine a world without KPFA. In 1964 as a student arrested in Sproul Hall, in 1967 as a leader of Stop the Draft Week and in 1969 as a member of the Oakland Seven on trial for conspiracy KPFA stood beside me. As a labor organizer on Local 250 picket lines & sit-ins in 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s, KPFA has been there for me. And so today in the fight for Single Payer Healthcare, KPFA is always present, recording our history and helping us to build and sustain our struggles.”

Candidacy Statment:

My name is Mike Smith. I am running for the KPFA Board of Directors as a member of the Concerned Listeners Slate because I want KPFA to continue to be the voice for progressive change, and an essential part of the movements for peace, social, economic, and environmental justice.

In 1964 as a student arrested in Sproul Hall, in 1967 as a leader of Stop the Draft Week, in 1969 as a member of the Oakland Seven on trial for conspiracy, on Local 250 picket lines and sit ins in 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s and in today’s fight for Single Payer Healthcare, KPFA has always been present, helping us organize, recording our history and helping us to build and sustain our struggles.

I can’t imagine a world without KPFA. I have decided to run on the Concerned Listeners Slate because I share their commitment to expanding and diversifying programs and their support for the hard working dedicated KPFA staff.

I am a former emergency room nurse and retired union organizer. I marched with Martin Luther King in Selma, was arrested as a SNCC volunteer in Mississippi and picketed and marched with Caesar Chavez.

In 1990 I helped organize the North Bay Committee to save KPFA and organized Bay Area Labor Council support.

I am a former member of the Executive Board of the North Bay Labor Council, the Santa Rosa Jr. College Board of Trustees and the Sonoma Valley Hospital Board of Directors. I am a member of Veterans for Peace, Sonoma Valley Peace and Justice, and Progressive Democrats; I am Director of Sonoma Valley Health Care For All and a member of the Statewide Grassroots Organizing Committee for the One Care Now Campaign for Single Payer.

We are facing the most critical challenge in my lifetime, a growing depression, ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, erosion of our civil liberties, and a broken health care system. We need KPFA more then ever. I believe we need to unite together and work cooperatively for the survival of KPFA. That is why I am running as a part of the Concerned Listeners Slate.
Thank you for your vote.

Sincerely,

Mike Smith
